Breda Carty is a lecturer in Special Education at the RIDBC Renwick Centre (affiliated with the University of Newcastle) in Sydney, Australia. She has had many years experience as a teacher of the deaf and in developing resource materials about the Deaf community, culture and history. She was one of the pioneers of the Deaf Studies field in Australia, and regularly delivers presentations and community workshops on these topics. Her doctorate thesis was on Australian Deaf organisations in the early 20th Century. She has a special interest in Deaf history, and is a former Secretary of Deaf History International. Breda has been actively involved in Deaf community organisations at local, national and international levels, and is currently a member of the WFD Expert Groups on Deaf Culture and Bioethics
