Catherine Hoad is a lecturer in the School of Music and Creative Media Production at Massey University, Wellington. She received her PhD from Macquarie University in 2016, where her doctoral research focused on the intersections of race, gender and national identity in heavy metal scenes in Norway, South Africa and Australia. Her wider research interests include fan studies, gender studies, and the relationship between popular music and national identity.
