Fiona Place has always been interested in women, medicine and language. She has been widely published including journals such as Meanjin and Down Syndrome Research and Practice. Her first novel Cardboard explored the issues of language and anorexia nervosa and won the 1990 National Book Council New Writer's Award. More recently she wrote her column "Debt & Equity" for The Australian. Currently she is writing about disability.
