Robert Lawrence is an interdisciplinary artist/filmmaker. His videos and video installations are exhibited internationally. For 20 years he has uniquely engaged conceptual opportunities of the Internet when deployed in conjunction with film, installation and embodied actions in public space. Lawrence reformulates rolls of media producer/consumer with visionary applications of digital technologies. His groundbreaking open source film/performance Un Message screened worldwide. Recent series Tango Intervention has been produced in 42 cities internationally, twice in NYC as part of Conflux Festival. Tango Panopticon streamed live video from simultaneous art interventions in public spaces under corporate/government video surveillance on 4 continents. For Tango Panopticon Lawrence produced innovative open source software facilitating Internet viewing and theater projection of unlimited simultaneous video streams shot remotely on cell phones. To make this functionality available to anyone he produced VuPango, a free blog plugin. Ongoing project Horizon will culminate in a 24-hour live performance of actions engaging horizon lines worldwide, all streaming live video from the performance site to a virtual horizon line online. While consistently crafting works of formal beauty, Lawrence breaks new ground contextualizing filmmaking as social sculpture. Lawrence received his MFA at the University of California at San Diego, where he served as Regents Fellow. He took his BA in Humanities (Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) at the University of California at Berkeley. He is writing his PhD dissertation at European Graduate School. Lawrence is Associate Professor and director of Video, Animation & Digital Arts in the College of the Arts at the University of South Florida.
